Dr. Shelton completed his training in Orthodontics at Columbia University, and after four years of private practice, he made the conscious decision to wear braces so that he could gain first-hand experience of what it was like to be an orthodontic patient. Office manager Jascinth Smith, then studying to become registered as both a dental nurse and orthodontic assistant, also chose to wear braces and gain the same insight.
While being patients, Dr. Shelton and Mrs. Smith both came to realize that although they were very happy with the results of their treatment, they found the experience to be less than enjoyable. Dr. Shelton believed that there had to be a better way for patients to get what they desired without all the hassle.
Dr. Shelton then revolutionized his patient care system to allow longer single patient visits, using leading edge technology and gentle appliances and giving his patients accelerated overall treatment times and simultaneously a more comfortable experience.
This revolutionary approach changed the orthodontic industry, causing the practice to be analyzed and published in the prestigious American Journal of Orthodontics (Volume 106, Number 1). During this study, it was revealed that average treatment times for Dr Shelton's patients were 12.9 months compared to industry averages that exceed 18 months.
Since then Dr. Shelton has been teaching this revolutionary technique in New York City at both Montefiore and St. Barnabas Orthodontic training programs.
